ModMaster
Software Developer ‘Standout’ in She’s Such a Geek
Brentwood, TN,
January 22, 2007 – An essay by Kory Wells, director of
product development for Specific Software Solutions, leads the
newly released book She’s Such a Geek: Women Write About
Science, Technology, and Other Nerdy Stuff. Published by
Seal Press and edited by Annalee Newitz and Charlie Anders, the
anthology features writing by and about women who have lived,
worked and played in traditionally male-dominated technical
areas. Wells is the lead developer of ModMaster software, used
nationwide by agents, brokers and other risk management
professionals to compute and analyze the workers compensation
modification factor.
Ladies' Home Journal named She’s
Such a Geek to their "Books We Love" list in December 2006
and particularly noted Wells’ “standout essay” that will
“resonate with any woman, geek or not.” In the essay framed by
her childhood desire to be an astronaut, Wells writes about her
mother's legacy of pursuing passions - even when they contradict
traditional cultural roles.
“I’ve always been
willing to do things a little differently in order to follow my
callings,” Wells said. “That’s led to a full, balanced life that
I cherish. I hope this story may inspire others to think about
their own passions.”
Wells, who has
been affiliated with Specific Software since 1994, has been
writing fiction and poetry for several years. Her
novel-in-progress was a finalist in the prestigious William
Faulkner competition. “I essentially have two careers that don’t
often intersect,” she says, “but having this essay published is
a wonderful merger of those worlds.”
The collection,
described as “jubilant” and “irrepressible” by Publisher’s
Weekly, is widely available at bookstores and online.
